High mountain Arslan[a] was the second Sultan of the Seljuk Empire and extraordinary grandson of Seljuk, the eponymous pioneer behind the administration. He significantly extended the Seljuk region and united his power, overcoming opponents toward the south and northwest, and his triumph over the Byzantines at the Battle of Manzikert, in 1071, introduced the Turkoman settlement of Anatolia.[2] For his tactical ability and battling abilities, he acquired the name Alp Arslan, and that signifies "Chivalrous Lion" in Turkish.
